UNA CANTINA SOSTENIBILE
With over 300 members and more than 80 years of history, the Cooperativa Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano is the oldest wine cooperative in Tuscany and the largest in the area.
Since its foundation in 1937, our company has been characterized by a single great passion and a single common objective: to guarantee quality products at an accessible price, in respect for local tradition and protecting of the environmental heritage that surrounds us.
The constant commitment to the research of increasingly sustainable techniques and methods, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, combined with the solidity of the values of fairness and equal opportunities led the Cooperative to obtain certification for the SOPD EQUALITAS sustainability standard in 2021 – SUSTAINABILITY OF THE WINE INDUSTRY CHAIN: ORGANIZATIONS, PRODUCTS, DESIGNATIONS OF ORIGIN (SOPD).
Starting from this goal, the Cooperative’s activities are examined annually and if necessary, implemented in environmental, economic and social aspects, with a special attention to continuous improvement, consistently with the principles of the SOPD EQUALITAS sustainability standard.
DIVERSITY EQUITY AND INCLUSION POLICY
DE&I Policy

pariopportunita@
Every day, the professionals who work within the Cooperativa Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano act with the aim of protecting and enhancing the agricultural and territorial heritage of Montepulciano on the one hand, and the symbolic wine products of our region on the other. These are the reasons why we operate at the forefront in the adoption of low environmental impact methodologies in the care of the vineyards and lands of Montepulciano. Likewise, even in cellar practices the choice falls on the most innovative low-intervention techniques.
The synergy of this dual vision is aimed primarily at maintaining the virtuous ecological processes of our territory and protecting its biodiversity. At the same time, and in an equally fundamental way, we are committed daily to preserving the quality of our wines: being leaders in the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. A process that also passes through more conscious communication of wine culture.
Packaging
For years, the Cooperativa Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano has been committed to modifying the packaging of its products, thus reducing their weight and at the same time contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions, both during production and transport. This intervention is encouraged through the specific contribution provided by the CONAI National Packaging Consortium. Net of this intervention policy, we can underline how over one million kg of glass for the production of bottles was saved during 2022.
Power
The energy used by the Cooperative for its ordinary activities comes both from conventional electricity suppliers and from the self-production of energy from its own photovoltaic systems. The Cooperative’s attention to improving the energy performance of its structures has led to the adoption since 2018 of a system of photovoltaic systems, implemented in 2023 to obtain an estimated production of 300,000 KWh/year of renewable energy.
Waterfall
In relation to the delicate issue of climate change taking place on our planet, one of the most complex challenges that agriculture is called upon to respond to is that concerning water and water supply. For this reason, all the water used by the Cooperative during the production process is systematically conveyed to the purification plants installed at the two company offices, and authorized by the Tuscany Region. The care with which the ordinary and extraordinary analysis and maintenance activities on these systems are carried out is extremely high. Furthermore, work is currently underway to expand and modernize the purification system installed at the headquarters, as a consequence of the increase in production recorded in recent years.
Waste
The waste produced by the production cycle consists exclusively of packaging and sludge resulting from the emptying operations of the purifier tanks present at the winemaking center. All packaging waste is disposed of through the recovery cycle, while sludge is sent to specialized and authorized disposal plants. The Cooperative also promotes and supports the reuse of processing by-products and waste materials (pomace and lees for the production of distillates, stalks for treatment in biogas production plants), with a view to the circular economy.

Coollaboration with Betadue
In carrying out this project, the members of Betadue, a social cooperative for work inclusion in southern Tuscany, based in Arezzo, worked (and will continue to do so) both in the cellar and in the vineyard. Betadue’s activities are aimed at the employment and social inclusion of individuals exposed to the risk of exclusion.
Gender equality
Both the Betadue association and obviously Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano are cooperatives actively committed to respecting gender equality. For this reason, they have adopted policies aimed at measuring the effectiveness of the actions undertaken to guarantee an increasingly inclusive working environment. In this regard, our Cooperative boasts the UNI/PdR 125:2022 gender equality certification.
Distribution
NO.MO.S. wine it is already present and available on the market, with a distribution that covers the entire national territory. It was produced in a print run of 5,000 bottles, of which 1,500 in Magnum format (with recycled wood box).
It is a wine obtained mainly from Sangiovese grapes, with a two-year refinement. It is characterized by an intense ruby red color, a scent of ripe red fruit, with notes of vanilla and flecks of black pepper, and a full-bodied and balanced taste.
S for Sustainability
The peculiarity of this wine is symbolically represented by the S present in the name of the label: that is, by Sustainability. An aspect that the Cooperative wanted to underline and put at the center with this product. Furthermore, in the No.Mo.S. identity card the acronym “ESG” also appears, an acronym that stands for “environmental”, social (society) and governance.
These keywords perfectly represent the process that underlies each phase of the manufacturing process. Starting from the vineyard, where in addition to respecting contracts and working standards, there is also the inclusion of vulnerable people, who can thus find in work not only a source of income, but also a tool to improve their living conditions.
